Psychological Safety in Teams Starts with Everyday Behaviours

Psychological safety in teams is the shared belief that it’s okay to speak up, make mistakes, and challenge ideas without fear of embarrassment or blame. It’s the bedrock of successful teams, with research linking it positively to individual attitudes, team behaviours, environment, and overall performance.

But, like many aspects of organisational culture, it doesn’t appear overnight. Psychological safety in teams grows through consistent signals of trust and openness: the tone leaders set, the way they respond to challenge, and how they handle mistakes.

Yet whilst it plays a key role in organisations, recent data from MHFA England shows there is a gap between good intentions and lived experience:

  • Only 66% of respondents feel their contributions are valued, regardless of identity or background.
  • Around a third admit they’re afraid of being blamed for mistakes.

So, how can leaders close that gap? Download our free infographic to uncover the small, powerful behaviours that help psychological safety in teams take root and thrive.
