Supporting Our NHS In Their Virtual Training Endeavours

As COVID-19 hit, NHS- East Suffolk and North Essex approached VTT as they needed to upskill their trainers to confidently adapt to training in a  virtual environment. As with other organisations, social distancing was imposed and face to face teaching became difficult. For NHS-ESNEFT this meant that virtual learning was the best way of training and upskilling their staff. At VTT, we were delighted when NHS-ESNEFT approached us and gave us the opportunity to support an organisation that was working above and beyond for the whole of the UK during the pandemic. Tailoring our solution for NHS-ESNEFT’s specific needs, we offered a flexible approach to our Train the Trainer programme with multiple sessions at various times to make sure that the majority of the key workers could attend at a time which suited them.

challenge

Pre-COVID-19, NHS-ESNEFT used a classroom-based approach for training staff. However, one of the major challenges that NHS-ESNEFT faced was adapting to virtual learning due to social distancing. The NHS-ESNEFT were clear that whilst certain things during the pandemic could be placed on hold, training for their members of staff could not. This meant that the NHS-ESNEFT had to upskill quickly and become familiar with virtual learning to make sure they could train new and existing members of staff effectively to ensure they were ready for the long-term. On top of this, the NHS-ESNEFT was so heavily impacted by the pandemic, they were busier than normal, with more members of staff required to help under increasingly demanding circumstances. This of course meant that new staff needed to be onboarded and trained quickly so they could be effective in their new roles. It became clear that in the midst of the pandemic, in-person teaching was becoming more challenging, so the NHS-ESNEFT felt they had to find alternative ways of training their new and existing staff.

Solution

NHS-ESNEFT approached the Virtual Training Team to take part in a Train the Trainer programme, as it was the most effective way to learn the skills to be able to train their staff virtually. VTT ran three full TTT programmes, each cohort consisting of ten people, which ran concurrently to meet the needs of NHS-ESNEFT. The programme included modules on design, delivery, interaction, platform and practical masterclasses. Another two cohorts of ten people then followed the first set of programmes. VTT took a very flexible approach as members of staff from NHS-ESNEFT had very busy schedules and inconsistent shift patterns meaning that attending each session was somewhat challenging for some. With this in mind, VTT ran multiple sessions to fit around busy schedules and allowed all participants to attend as many sessions as possible. Maximum capacities of participants for each session on the TTT programme were also increased to allow more people to take part at the same time to train staff as quickly as possible.

Result

Despite the fast-paced delivery that was required, it was an extremely successful programme. Fifty trainers were successfully trained to be able to confidently work in a virtual environment. VTT received outstanding feedback from delegates achieving an NPS score of 9.55, with many indicating that they would be interested in taking part in further programmes in the future. Participants left with certificates and badges for completing the TTT programme to celebrate their hard work and mark their achievement and after completing the TTT programme, the general morale of the NHS-ESNEFT appeared to be considerably higher, something we take pride in contributing to at such a challenging time for our NHS.
