Difficult conversations are, unsurprisingly, difficult! Typically, managers don’t want to have them, so they skirt around the issue or avoid the conversation entirely. An insurance industry client gave us a challenge. An employee engagement survey showed that their managers needed help with facilitating uncomfortable conversations about contentious issues.

We came up with a solution for virtual and in-person delivery that could be integrated into a wider leadership development program.

Solution

  • Two design approaches were developed for a suite of 3 workshops to include both virtual and face-to-face delivery
  • Three workshops were designed to focus on key subject areas:
  • Giving Feedback
  • Coaching Conversations
  • Career Conversations
  • An innovate ‘flipped’ design was developed for the workshops that included pre-recorded videos and other content to be consumed before the workshop
  • Pre-work videos were placed on the client LMS and made available for everyone, not just the participants

Result

  • The 3 ‘flipped’ workshops are now delivered via both virtual and in-person approaches
  • Workshops have been oversubscribed from day one
  • Large numbers of employees have enjoyed the videos on the LMS, and feedback from managers is overwhelmingly positive
  • Workshops successfully integrated into the wider leadership program
