People perform at their best when they feel empowered to do so. Empowerment at work can contribute to higher levels of motivation, performance and overall satisfaction.

One way of increasing empowerment is to increase autonomy – but this isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds! As a manager, it is important to create the right balance of empowerment within your team. This means that individuals can enjoy an appropriate level of autonomy and accountability in a safe and supported environment.

In this virtual workshop, we consider the different types and levels of autonomy that may be required in a working environment. We consider the importance of setting expectations within your team and how this relates to decision making, psychological safety and balancing autonomy with support. You will learn practical tips for creating empowerment and have the opportunity to apply this knowledge to your own experiences in considering the different types and levels of autonomy that your individual team members may require.

  • They have the skills and knowledge to begin to create an environment in which team members can feel autonomous and accountable whilst being appropriately supported. 


  • Establish expectations around ways of working within their team.
  • Take steps to balance autonomy and support so that it is appropriate to each team member and activity.
  • Identify actions they can take to ensure that their team members have the most appropriate levels of autonomy for them.
