How to Delegate

Delegating tasks and projects is a vital part of effective management, yet it’s something that many managers find challenging. Impact on

Your Organisation

  • Improved resourcing – organisations looking to fully utilise stretched people will benefit from helping managers learn how to delegate and maximise resourcing within their own teams.
  • Succession planning – individuals in teams that have managers who delegate well can learn new skills and demonstrate potential for stepping up into roles with more responsibility.
  • Limiting single points of failure – a culture of good delegation creates more knowledge and skills across roles, enabling colleagues to support each other when resources are low and removing the danger of individuals becoming bottlenecks by being the only person who can do certain tasks.

Workshop Participants

  • Explore how to delegate and allocate work in a way that makes best use of team resources.
  • Discover the most common barriers to delegation and how to overcome them, giving themselves ‘permission’ to delegate and focus their energy on the priorities that will make the biggest difference to business outcomes.
  • Learn how to set clear expectations whilst delegating, so that the delegation is completed successfully and benefits both themselves and their team member or colleague.
  • Find out how to balance the support they give to others when delegating, improving outcomes and relationships between themselves and their team members.

More Information

Delegation is a core management skill. When done well, it enables work to move forward efficiently while giving team members opportunities to build confidence, skills and ownership. Effective delegation also allows managers to focus on higher-value priorities, while creating the conditions for teams to grow and perform sustainably.

In practice, though, delegation can be harder than it sounds. Managers may hold on to work due to time pressure, lack of trust, or concerns about quality. Poor experiences of delegation in the past can reinforce unhelpful habits, leading to overload and frustration on both sides. Avoiding delegation often feels safer in the short term, but creates real costs over time.

This workshop helps participants to understand the full delegation process, from recognising common barriers to deciding what and how to delegate. Participants will explore how to identify suitable tasks for delegation, set clear expectations, and distinguish between delegating tasks and delegating responsibility. They will also learn how to balance support appropriately, taking into account factors such as skill, confidence and capacity.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with a clearer, more confident approach to delegation – helping them to work smarter, not harder. They will identify specific work they can delegate next, understand how to set others up for success, and develop habits that support both team development and more effective use of their own time.
